Lama Temple

Español

(English after)

English

I do not profess any religion or religious belief (although I don’t consider myself an atheist), but I have much interest in some of their philosophies and I have great respect for those who practice them, I have studied  the Christian doctrine, Judaism and its history and Islam and the culture that has generated, that is the ones of more call my attention; religions that outside their theology beliefs I think have contributed a lot to my development as an individual and my way of seeing the world.

In my studies I also have interest in Eastern religious philosophies, especially Buddhism, I think it very fit my way of understanding life, and it is fascinating to be entering their entire cosmology. I had only had contact with Buddhism through some sects that are common in the West, and were quite disappointing, so on my list of things to do in China was to visit as many temples as I could.

And the best way to start was with Yonghe Temple 雍和宫 (Palace of Peace and Harmony), the most important Buddhist temple in Beijing.

It is a temple of Tibetan Buddhism and monastery of the Gelug School དགེ་ ལུགས་ པ, is a palace built in 1695 by the Qing Dynasty, former official residence of the eunuchs of the imperial court, then became the palace of the Prince Yong (later Emperor Yongzheng), after Yongzheng’s ascension to the throne half of the building was converted into a lamasery.

Since the paifang 牌坊 (gateways) it feels an incredible energy, is a place that despite being so crowded is very quiet, there are many people praying between a dense clouds coming out of large censers.

They are a series of large halls, the first is Devaraja, Hall of the Heavenly King, In the center of the hall stands a statue of the Maitreya Buddha मैत्रेय, along the walls statues of the four Heavenly Kings.

Then follows Yonghegong, Hall of Harmony and Peace, It houses three bronze statues of the Buddhas of the Three Ages, the statue of the Gautama Buddha 佛陀 (Buddha of the Present) is in the center, it is flanked by the statue of Kasyapa Matanga (Buddha of the Past, right) and the Maitreya Buddha मैत्रेय (Buddha of the Future, left). Along the sides of the hall, the statues of the 18 Arhats (the perfect person that has attained Nirvana) are placed.

Followed Yong Dian, Hall of Everlasting Protection, was the former living quarters of the prince, and place where his coffin was placed after his death, today a statue of the Bhaisajya-guru 藥師佛 (healing Buddha) stands in this hall.

Falundian, The Hall of the Wheel of the Law functions as a place for reading scriptures and conducting religious ceremonies, it contains a large statue of Je Tsongkhapa ཙོང་ ཁ་ པ ་, founder of the Geluk School. It also contains the impressive sculpture of the the Five-Hundred-Arhat-Hill, a carving made of red sandalwood with statues of the arhats made from five different metals (gold, silver, copper, iron, and tin).

Wanfu, the Pavilion of Ten Thousand Happinesses was my favorite room, with the impressive statue of the Maitreya Buddha 18 meters tall (with an additional 8m underground, making it 26m in total) carved from a single piece of White Sandalwood, this was a gift from the seventh Dalai Lama to the Qianlong Emperor and took three years to transport from Tibet to Beijing.

Within the halls it was forbidden to take pictures, but most tourists do not seem to mind, I chose to follow the rules and enjoy moments of peace and keep the beauty of these places only in my memory, although I take pictures of the courtyards between halls and the exterior of the buildings.
