The Hutongs on Film

A China traje conmigo mi cámara Pentax K1000, y he estado probando diferentes tipos de film, algunos de alta graduación, otros vencidos, más que todo divirtiéndome y experimentando.

Y hace unos días llevé el primer lote de rollos al laboratorio a revelar, no todos los resultados han sido los esperados, pero continuó practicando y aprendiendo.

Para mi China se ve mejor en film, y acá las primeras fotos que voy a ir publicando, empezando con los Hutongs, como ya había dicho antes, una de mis partes favoritas de Beijing.

To China I brought with me my camera Pentax K1000, and I’ve been trying different types of film, some high-grade, other expired, mostly having fun and experimenting.

And a few days ago I took the first batch of rolls to the laboratory to develop, not all the results have been the desired, but I’ll continued practicing and learning.

To me China looks better on film, and here the first photos that I will be publishing, starting with the Hutongs, as I had said before, one of my favorite parts of Beijing.

Siempre he estado fascinado con Asia, al principio con Japón, desde que siendo un niño veía muchos cartoons japoneses, anime, mechas, robots, todos estos personajes con nombres extraños, me mostraban un mundo que a mi corta edad ya entendía como algo diferente (aparte de la fantasía), sabía que al otro lado del mundo había otra manera de ver y hacer las cosas, o más o menos eso entendía.

Películas como Karate Kid, o la serie de TV Shogun, con Richard Chamberlain, donde superficialmente me introducían a otras filosofías y algo de historia; y mis primeros contactos con la cultura china, también en la TV, fue con las famosas “Las Palmas Magicas de Buda” 如来神掌 y algo que generó una gran impresión en mí, la miniserie Marco Polo, con Burt Lancaster, Leonard Nimoy y Ken Marshall (el de Krull) y música de Ennio Morricone (la serie era una producción italiana).

Así mismo como el joven Marco Polo iba descubriendo el oriente así mismo iba Yo adentrándome en la historia, el encuentro con otra civilización, y por supuesto con la ayuda de mi padre que me iba dando el contexto histórico real; y podría seguir así un largo rato escribiendo sobre cine, TV, animación, cómics, literatura, música, gastronomía, religión, arte, mis aventuras en el Chinatown de San Francisco o en el Barrio Chino de Buenos Aires, y todo lo que fue alimentando mi curiosidad y fascinación a lo largo de los años.
Y el mundo se hizo más pequeño, China se convertía en una gran potencia, poco a poco su influencia se hacía sentir, uno de mis mejores amigos se mudó a vivir a Beijing y poco tiempo después otros amigos empezaron a viajar allá, ya no era un destino tan exótico y lejano, sabía que en algún momento próximo iba a tener la oportunidad de conocerla.

Luego de un par de fallidos intentos por fin tuve la oportunidad de conocer China (como conté en mi post anterior).

Beijing es una ciudad impresionante, desde que llegué vi construcciones en todo lados, una ciudad en permanente y rápido crecimiento, imponentes edificaciones, la mezcla de estilos, lo moderno (o neo-moderno), los sobrios edificios al estilo soviético, y las antiguas edificaciones tradicionales chinas, amplias calles con canales igual de grandes para bicicletas y autos, bastante contaminación, mucho movimiento, todo muy organizado, eficiente diría.

Por más que me preparara y que pensara que tenía una idea de lo que me iba a encontrar, no podía imaginar cómo era estar acá (por supuesto uno nunca puede) pero mis primeras impresiones no me decepcionan, al contrario superan mis expectativas.

Como había contado antes, mi primera visita fue a los Hutongs 胡同, sitios que para mi son la mejor manera de entrar en contacto con la cultura china, antigua y moderna, con la gente de Beijing, con gente común que viven todavía como lo han hecho durante cientos de años, ahora entre la metrópolis de alta tecnología.

“Los hutongs reflejan el aspecto real de la historia de Beijing” leí en alguna guía, pero quedan muy pocos en el estilo tradicional, Nanluoguxiang es uno de los más populares y mejor preservados, es donde he pasado más tiempo; está relativamente cerca de La Ciudad Prohibida y forma parte de la antigua ciudad imperial.

Su calle principal es Luogu Xiang 锣故巷, que es bastante concurrida, muy popular entre turistas, muchas gente siempre, si bien me gusto mucho, las cosas más interesantes las vi en los callejones laterales, más tranquilos y donde se aprecia la vida cotidiana de sus habitantes.

La gente es extremadamente amable, siempre sonrientes, muy curiosos de uno, algunos se acerca a hablar, aunque no entendía nada siempre me sentí a gusto.

También hay pequeños locales escondidos que son un deleite, restaurantes tradicionales, algunos de cocina de otros países, algunos bares y los encantadores cafés de gatos.

En los callejones están las entradas a las casas, grandes puertas casi siempre rojas (el color de la suerte chino), como podrán ver por las fotos son de las cosas que más les presté atención, luego aprendí sobre los dioses de las puertas, unas deidades muy populares en la cultura china y muy aceptadas en la vida diaria.

Yo estoy muy asombrado con China, es increíble lo que este pueblo ha logrado, ver una cultura en conexión directa con su pasado, una línea directa y progresiva de una historia milenaria, una manera muy diferente de ver al mundo, una potencia que nos lleva al futuro, creo que en occidente tenemos mucho que aprender de China.

I have always been fascinated with Asia, in the beginning with Japan, since I was a child and watched so many Japanese cartoons, anime, mecha, robots, all these characters with strange names, showing me a world that at my young age I understood like something different (aside from the fantasy), I knew that on the other side of the world was another way of seeing and doing things, or more or less.

Likewise as the young Marco Polo was discovering the east would I getting further in history, the encounter with another civilization, and of course with the help of my father who was giving me the real historical context; I could well continue for a long time writing about films, TV, animation, comics, literature, music, food, religion, art, my adventures in San Francisco’s Chinatown or in Buenos Aires Chinatown, and all that was feeding my curiosity and fascination over the years.

And the world became smaller, China becomes a great power, gradually his influence was felt everywhere, one of my best friends moved to live in Beijing and other friends soon after began to travel there, it was not such an exotic and distant destination anymore, I knew that anytime soon I would have the chance to go there.

After a couple of failed attempts I finally had the opportunity to meet China (as I told in my previous post).

Beijing is an amazing city, since I arrived I see constructions everywhere, a city in constant and rapid growth, next to stunning buildings, the mix of styles, the modern (or neo-modern), sober Soviet-style buildings and ancient Chinese traditional buildings, wide streets with the same large canals for bikes and cars, a lot of pollution, a lot of movement, all very organized, efficient I would say.
As much as I prepared me and I thought I had an idea of what I would find, I could not imagine what it was like (of course one will never can) but my first impressions do not disappoint me, on the contrary was beyond my expectations.

As I told before, my first visit was to the Hutongs 胡同, places which to me are the best way to get in touch with Chinese culture, ancient and modern, with the people of Beijing, with ordinary people who still live as they have done for hundreds of years, now among the high-tech metropolis.

“The hutongs reflects the real appearance of Beijing’s history” I read in some guide, but very few remaining in the traditional style, Nanluoguxiang is one of the most popular and best preserved, is where I have spent more time; It is relatively close to The Forbidden City and is part of the former imperial city.

Its main street is Luogu Xiang 锣故巷, which is quite busy, popular with tourists, always with a lot of people, although I loved it, the most interesting things I saw was on the side alleys, much more calmer, and where can be seen the daily life of its inhabitants.

The people are extremely friendly, always smiling, very curious of one, some people come to talk, even though I did not understand anything I always felt at ease.

In these alleys there are small hidden places that are a delight, traditional restaurants, some of cuisine from other countries, some bars and the lovely cats cafes.

In the alleys are these doorways, large doors usually painted in red (the lucky color in China), as you can see in the pictures are the things that I paid more attention, I learned some about the gods of the doors, some deities very popular in the Chinese culture and widely accepted in everyday life.

I am very impressed with China, it’s amazing what his people have done, to see a culture in direct connection with its past, a direct and progressive line of millennial history, a very different way of seeing the world, a new power that leads us to future, I think we in the West have much to learn from China.

Vine a China 中国 gracias a una invitación que me hizo mi hermana, que vive y trabaja en Beijing 北京 desde hace casi tres años, es un viaje que había querido hacer toda mi vida, y este es el primer Post de una larga serie que voy a estar haciendo durante los próximos meses.

Todo fue bastante improvisado, una oportunidad que se me presentó inesperadamente y con poco tiempo para preparar, visas y demás trámites, un poco estresante por un momento, pero todo salió muy bien y a tiempo.

Fue un largo viaje de tres días cruzando literalmente medio mundo, en una extraña semana que no tuvo día Martes, pasé una noche en Miami, otra escala en Texas y un interminable vuelo sobre Alaska y el Estrecho de Bering hasta Beijing, y unas ansias increíbles por llegar, por supuesto todo valió la pena.

Apenas con un par de horas de haber aterrizado, todavía muy desorientado por el jetlag tuve mi primer encuentro con la ciudad y la cultura china, los Hutongs de Nanluoguxiang 南锣鼓巷.

Los Hutongs 胡同 son las pequeñas calles de los barrios tradicionales de Beijing, reminiscencia de lo que fue la antigua ciudad, donde todavía se ven los Siheyuan 四合院, las tradicionales casas de vecindad chinas con patio interior.

Al final de la tarde Nanluoguxiang es bastante concurrido, una larga calle principal llena de muchos comercios, algunos muy hip, otros más tradicionales, un deleite visual, sensorial en general, perfecto para fotografiar.

En el siguiente Post escribiré más sobre Nanluoguxiang, que se convirtió en mi parte favorita de Beijing, por ahora disfruten de esta primera selección de fotografías.

I came to China 中国 thanks to an invitation that my sister made me, she had live and work in Beijing 北京 for nearly three years, a journey that I had wanted to do all my life, and this is the first post of a long series that I will be doing over the next months.

This trip was quite improvised, an opportunity that came to me unexpectedly and with little time to prepare, visas and other dealings, a bit stressful for a moment, but everything went very smoothly and on time.

It was a long three day strip, literally across half the world, in a strange week that did not have Tuesday, one night in Miami, another stop in Texas and an endless flight over Alaska and the Bering Strait to Beijing, and an incredible cravings to arrive, of course it was all worthwhile.

Just a couple of hours I have landed, still disoriented by the jet lag, I had my first encounter with the city and the Chinese culture, the Hutongs of Nanluoguxiang 南锣鼓巷.

The Hutongs 胡同 are a type of narrow streets on the traditional neighborhoods of Beijing, reminiscent of what was the ancient city, where you can still see the Siheyuan 四合院, the traditional Chinese vicinity houses with an inner courtyard.

By end of the afternoon Nanluoguxiang is quite crowded, long street with many shops, some very hip, other more traditional ones, a visual delight, very sensorial in general, perfect for photographing.

In the next Post I will write more about Nanluoguxiang, which became my favorite part of Beijing, for now enjoy this first selection of photographs.
