Semana Santa 2015

My experience following the Holy Week in Guanare, the Venezuelan Llanos

Español

(English after)

English

I was photographing some of the activities of the Holy Week in Guanare, a very rewarding experience to be in contact with the cultural expressions of my hometown, which still preserved some of the oldest traditions.

It was also gratifying to participate in the processions in La Peñita, the neighborhood where my mother is from, and myself was born, a community that remains very active with his church, what I think true Christianity should be, if I may comment, me having no religion.

The first day I went out to take pictures was the beginning of Holy Week, Palm Sunday, where tradition says Jesus entered Jerusalem, and in the neighborhood made a representation of that entry, with Jesus on his donkey and all, a procession that ended in the parochial church where Jesus gave a lesson to the merchants from the temple.

The other day was the day of the Passion of Christ, Holy Thursday, this time with a different Jesus , a procession called the Nazarene, where all dressed in purple (Jesus as a mockery was dressed in royal purple by the Roman soldiers), this time was a long way from the square of the Coronation, which celebrates the Virgin of Coromoto (Virgin patron of the city) to return to the parochial Church.

Even I, who am not a religious person nor follow any religious belief can find the meaning of the celebrations of the Holy Week, and to feel spiritually shaken but not supernatural beliefs, but by humility and devotion of the people who follow them.
